Challenging Industrial Design Students
نویسنده
چکیده
During their time in university, students of industrial design are typically trained to improve the appearance, function and value of products. This product-centric focus of the industrial designer’s work is often blamed for the proliferation of unnecessary products in the market and the promotion of such wasteful values as rapid obsolescence and conspicuous consumption. In this paper, the usual product-oriented syllabus of a third year industrial design studio course is challenged to embrace new content: that of fostering sustainable behaviors in the community through the design of product systems. Childcare centers and residential colleges in the university campus were targeted as “clients” for the students to engage in positive behavioral changes. Student reflections reveal that they enjoyed the experience of interacting with clients and working on briefs which tackle sustainability issues. Key-Words: industrial design, sustainable design, design education

Managing the Complexity of Design Problems through Studio-based Learning
The ill-structured nature of design problems makes them particularly challenging for problem-based learning. Studio-based learning (SBL), however, has much in common with problem-based learning and indeed has a long history of use in teaching students to solve design problems. The purpose of this ethnographic study of an industrial design class, an architecture class, and three human-computer-i...

Design is the interplay between logical and holistic thinking modes. It is therefore important for students majored in industrial design to balance their right and left brain hemispheres for effective communications with technological people and proper handling of design procedures. متن کاملAn Inexact-Fuzzy-Stochastic Optimization Model for a Closed Loop Supply Chain Network Design Problem
The development of optimization and mathematical models for closed loop supply chain (CLSC) design has attracted considerable interest over the past decades. However, the uncertainties that are inherent in the network design and the complex interactions among various uncertain parameters are challenging the capabilities of the developed tools. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to propose a n...

The industrial design cycle starts with design then simulation, prototyping, and testing. When the tests do not match the design requirements the design process is started over again. It is important for students to experience this process before they leave their academic institution. The high cost of the prototype phase, due to CNC/Rapid Prototype machine costs, makes hands on study of this pr...
